Kraven the Hunter is the main villain for most of Spider-Man 2 and he isn’t anywhere near interesting or dynamic enough to be in that role. The most interesting part of his section of the game is the symbiote. It takes a very long time for Venom to show up, some would say too long, but he steals the show the second he does.

Venom also appeared for a brief moment in the reveal trailer, and again in the more recent Story Trailer too. And while we know Peter will be able to wield Symbiote powers at some stage, there’s no telling if Venom himself will eventually join forces with the spidey duo, perhaps uniting against the common threat of Kraven The Hunter. Obviously, it wouldn’t be a Spider-Man game without the man of the hour, Peter Parker. Players will reprise the role of Spidey in Insomniac’s sequel, stepping into the shoes of the friendly neighborhood hero – though he won’t be alone. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was first revealed during Sony’s 2021 PlayStation Showcase event.
They’re just as enjoyable, as it feels like the suit is trying to burst out of the rumbling DualSense controller in my hands. This aggressive style of play is rewarded, as the only way to heal is by building up your focus bar – filled by landing hits and timing perfect dodges – and is another way to make sure that exciting rhythm of combat is never lost. It’s enough of a roller coaster to hold your interest, and the way the city physically changes and evolves to fit the ongoing narrative is impressive (from ‘post-Sandman attack’ to ‘overrun with big game hunters’ and beyond). But from a project this obviously big and expensive, it all feels disappointingly undercooked. With thrilling action gameplay and a deep story, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 capitalizes on the heights of its predecessors and somehow makes New York big enough for the two web-slingers who inhabit it. What’s more, it transforms villains from dated tropes to complex characters, and humanizes the people we save, and the ones who save us, in unforgettable ways.
The symbiote was first glimpsed at the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man, albeit within a stasis tube, and bonded to Harry Osborn to stabilize Harry’s terminal illness. Harry’s father Norman lied to Harry’s friends Peter and Mary Jane Watson that his son was working for Oscorp in Europe, when the truth was Harry was diagnosed with a terminal neurological disease and hidden in Oscorp Tower in Manhattan. As Norman approached Harry’s stasis container, the Venom symbiote visibly reacted when Norman touched a glass window on the container. The city’s loading has been accelerated, and now you can switch between heroes in the app or teleport quickly in just a couple of seconds. [newline]”Slingshots” and air currents have become new ways to speed up movement on the web, while on the wingsuit (available with every costume) you can fly around the city without it at all.
As with its thoughtful missions and characters, the game’s traversal system takes the best of the previous two Spider-Man games and expands them tenfold. Both Peter and Miles retain their own unique way of swinging and flipping through the city, replete with a collectible wardrobe of suits that sent this reviewer to the game’s photo mode for hours. Spider-Man 2 features an engaging superhero story full of twists and turns, brand-new symbiote powers to master as Peter Parker, and tons of incredible fights. It all takes place in a gorgeously-rendered open world New York City that, despite the odd graphical hiccup and clipping here and there, looks as good if not better on PC as it does on PS5. The animations are smooth, the combat is fast-paced and exciting, and the web-swinging exploration is top-notch.

Obviously, since the game hasn’t come out yet, we can’t give you a summary of Spider-Man 2 (we also wouldn’t want to spoil your next adventure). The mid-credits scene reveals that Harry is to be released from his stasis pod, even though his health is still unstable. Peter puts Miles to the test, going off to Symkaria for a couple of weeks to help MJ with her work as a reporter there and leaving Miles in charge of protecting the city, leaving him as the sole Spider-Man in NYC for the first time. Miles reveals to Peter in the credits’ scene that he has gained spider-like powers after he was bitten by a spider that escaped Osborn’s personal lab. Additionally, we’re shown a teaser for the Symbiote in Osborn’s lab, where he has also kept Harry in a tank until he finds a cure for his illness.
Peter and Miles oversee a prisoner transfer at the R.A.F.T., but are rudely interrupted by Kraven and his forces as they seek to capture the villains for unknown purposes. In SC88 , Mary Jane quits the Daily Bugle to run her own podcast and moves in with Peter, who opts to take a break from being Spider-Man to focus on rebuilding the EMF, trusting Miles to protect the city on his own. Meanwhile, Norman blames the Spider-Men for ruining Harry’s recovery; he visits an imprisoned Otto Octavius at the Raft to demand their secret identities, but Octavius refuses, taking glee in Norman’s suffering. Miles completes his college essay and meets Rio’s new boyfriend, Albert Moon, who introduces them to his daughter Cindy.
Outside of the likes of Venom, Kraven, and Lizard seen in the trailers, Insomniac has kept many more cards hidden up its sleeve. I won’t even hint at any of these except to say that Spider-Man 2 opens with a bang, offering up a sense of scale not previously seen in the series. It’s an adrenaline-fuelled reintroduction to the series that tests how well you remember the combat, as well as providing a few new tricks.
Of course, trailers also confirmed Venom would be unleashed upon New York City. Developer Firaxis has released the full PC system requirements for the upcoming release of Civilization 7, launching February 11, 2025. Our interactive map for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will help you find and reach all locations of note across the whole city. We marked the location of Just Let Go and Home Run trophies, all Marko’s Memories, Spider-bots, Hunter Blind and Bases, Mysteriums, Photo OPS, side missions, and Symbiote Nests that will help you complete the game 100%.
After Peter purged the symbiote from his body and it bonded to Eddie, Venom possessed all of Spider-Man’s abilities, but with greater physical capacity. To make him even more deadly, Eddie became aware of Peter’s secret identity from the symbiote’s time bonded to Spider-Man, and he gained the ability to nullify Spider-Man’s heightened senses. Stephen has been part of the Push Square team for over six years, bringing boundless enthusiasm and a deep knowledge of video games to his role as Assistant Editor. Having grown up playing every PlayStation console to date, he’s developed an eclectic taste, with particular passion for indie games, arcade racers, and puzzlers. He’s also our go-to guy for Sonic-related matters, much to his delight/chagrin. [Spoiler warning] One particular side quest that illustrates this best is a small one.
You can play as Peter and replay as Miles, each time enjoying a unique experience. For those with a hazy memory, there is a brief recap of both Peter and Miles’ stories so far available, which is handy, as this is very much a sequel that weaves in both plotlines and characters from the previous games and accompanying DLC. You won’t want to jump in for the first time here since Spider-Man 2 builds on the first two games both in its mechanics and its story – but of course, there’s little reason not to, since those games are also excellent. Avoiding spoilers, the basic premise revolves around Kraven the Hunter, who is, well, craving a hunt. For those uninitiated in the character, he’s essentially The Predator, an Apex hunter blessed with super strength who has chosen New York as his next hunting ground. It’s a great starting point that sends the city’s hero and villain dynamic into flux as he sets his sights on the biggest prey possible.
It’s a real triumph that it manages to cover such a wide spectrum of themes without suffering from tonal thwip-lash. A particularly memorable mission under the dancing lights of Coney Island’s amusement rides is a highlight that manages to impressively capture the story’s essence and bottle up its emotional tension before emphatically smashing it. A new personal favourite gadget called the Web Grabber – which pulls enemies in from a distance and makes them smack into one another – also playfully builds into this philosophy. I had a lot of fun using this before landing a sharp burst of Miles’ Venom lightning onto grouped-up goons, and now Peter can get in on that fun as well.
